This page contains information about the review of the Alcohol Bylaw.
Updated: 25/07/2018 3:41 p.m.

Council’s bylaw that controls alcohol bans in public places is up for review.

“This bylaw does not control things like the opening hours of licensed premises or where alcohol can be sold,” said Strategic Planner Shireen Munday, who will be coordinating the review in the Whangārei District.

“It is about controlling the consumption of alcohol in public places to support community safety and wellbeing.

“The review must be completed by December because of changes to legislation in 2013. Our Council, Far North and Kaipara District Councils are working on the review together to get alignment across the region where appropriate and possible.

In Whangārei an informal working group of four Councillors, Vince Cocurullo, Sharon Morgan, Gavin Benney and Sue Glenn are overseeing the new bylaw development process.

“Council will formally consult on the bylaw in September and more information, about the consultation and the feedback we are seeking, will be in the Whangarei Leader and on the internet in the weeks to come.”
