This page contains information about considering the Animal Shelter if you are thinking of a new fur friend.

Last year forty lucky dogs were rehomed from Council’s animal shelter. This is a great result all round - for the dogs, the animal control team and the families who gained new pets.

Armourguard and the SPCA have been working together to achieve this great outcome for adoptable dogs that, through no fault of their own, have found themselves at the animal shelter.

When suitable dogs are identified, the SPCA has been providing temperament tests to determine the best home environment for the dog and have done a preliminary health check and vaccination.

The dogs are all de-sexed, chipped and registered prior to leaving to go to their new forever home. One of the animal management officers will also do a home visit to check if your property is suitable for keeping a dog.

If you are looking for a new fur friend, please consider the Animal Shelter. You can contact them on 09 438 7513 to find out what dogs are available and to organise a viewing time.

“Our Shelter is grateful to receive any old blankets, quilts, or towels (no duvet inners or electric blankets) to make dogs’ stays at the shelter a bit more comfortable – just give us a call on 09 430 4200 to find out where to drop them off.
