Citizenship
Every year there are increasing numbers of migrants choosing the Whangarei District as their home and we conduct regular citizenship ceremonies during the year, hosted by the Mayor or his Deputy.
The ceremony is meaningful for migrants, who often see it as the start of their identifying as a New Zealander. A Māori welcome is followed by the Mayor’s speech, which highlights the relevance of the ceremony in developing a sense of belonging. Family and friends of the new citizens are invited to attend and it is an emotional experience for many.
