Council's Environmental Health Officers undertake a range of inspection of commercial premises such as food premises, hairdressers, offensive trades, camping grounds and funeral directors. There are regulations which specify minimum standards for these businesses to protect and enhance public health.

Environmental Health Officers are also Liquor Licensing Inspectors and in this role they inspect liquor licensed premises and report, with the Police and Medical Officer of Health, on a range of liquor applications. The requirements for licences and the criteria the authority consider in granting them are set out in the Sale of Liquor Act 1989 and Whangarei District Licensing Agency Liquor Licensing Policy.
