"Woven Together To Become Strong" or "Whiri Whiri Ngia Mai A Tatou Kia Kaha Rawa"

The new logo was designed in 1989 when the former Whangarei City, Whangarei County and Hikurangi Town Council's melded into one cohesive voice for the district.

"Woven Together To Become Strong" or "Whiri Whiri Ngia Mai A Tatou Kia Kaha Rawa" is one of the philosophies behind the council choosing the colours of burgundy and grey.

The broadly woven "W" stands for the concept of a wider Whangarei, while its peaks represent the Whangarei District Council's intention to strive to the highest ideals in local government.
